    Feministing post about rape

    Jessica Valenti posted this yesterday:

    Quote:
A "what about the menz?!" I can get behind

From CNN: Rape victims offer advice to today's college
    women

Some of the advice is good - like pointing out the inadequacies
surrounding campus policies on sexual assault. Some of the
advice gives me pause - like telling young women not to binge
drink. (I don't think you should binge drink either, it's bad for
you - but if someone rapes you, it's not because you've been
drinking,it's because the other person is a rapist.) I also think
it's great that the article is encouraging survivors to get help.

But seriously, what about the menz?!

Where is the article directed at young men in college giving the advice on how not to rape their peers? Where are the warnings to men not to drink, since in so many campus rapes, it is the perpetrator who has been drinking?

That is an article I would really like to see.
Here are some of the comments:

    Quote:
"This year in reflecting on the problem of violence against women I want to talk not about women. I want to talk about men."

Right on topic, here is an amazing, clear, and concise piece that I just stumbled across from the Women's College Hospital in Toronto:
Women's Health Matters Network: Health A-Z

It compares society's reaction to and preparation for the H1N1 fu virus to the even more rampant, yet less cared about, violence against women pandemic.

I'm going to post this on the Community site as well!
    Quote:
Honestly, I give CNN props for even going this far. This is progress for MSM, even if it still follows the tradition of focusing rape prevention efforts on what women can do to avoid it.

Even so, though, if you read the comments section (I would not advise this), there are a lot of people who take issue any focus on the rape epidemic (MRAs, among others). I suspect MSM outlets, being corporate, may be cautious of alienating that reader base, crappy as that may be.

It's too bad, incidentally, that for all the hubbub among MRAs about the "millions" of false accusations out there, they're not out there teaching men how to avoid being accused.
    Quote:
I've been waiting for that article for a very long time. The first time I even saw something that mentioned men's accountability in the "epidemic" of rape was in college, when the Men Against Violence group at my school filled the gentlemen's restrooms with urinal pads that read "you hold the answer to stopping rape in your hands." It was clever, but it was still all that I've ever seen that was directed at men, by men, reminding them that rape starts with them.

This is one of the main issues I take with Rana Husseini's book (which Feministing wrote a piece about a little while back.) Although "honor crimes" are indeed a tragedy, there was little to no mention in the book about educating men.

Ending violence against women shouldn't start with women. That's like saying that ending HIV should start with those who are already infected. It needs to be a point of prevention, starting from the source.

I can only wonder who's opinion and "version" of "the facts" will be used for the
    intended educationof men.

Will this be the same information that is used to educate judges behind closed doors in tropical retreats?
Will this be the same "data" that is the foundation of The Duluth Model?

I'm already seeing reference to the implication of morning-after regret, and virginity rebate, aren't from teenage/early twenties girls freely "exploring and engaging" in all sorts of sexual intercourse after they've been "exploring and engaging" in alcohol/drugs, they are to be considered drugged and/or raped, AGAINST THEIR WILL, in "many" cases.
Despite what they might otherwise be forced to testify in a court of law, and be
subject to penalties for attempted extortion, contempt, liable, and slander. (Yeah, yeah, I know, demonstrably NOT a historically realistic issue for women in "many" cases.)

OK, but without emancipation from "special protections" (tuition/insurance up to 25 years old is deemed "child" support?), these folk who are unable to tend to their own affairs will be denied access to ETOH, and public ballots on important issues, right?

Where does the term Sophomoric come from?
    What does it mean?
At what point is someone to be simply ignored, and declared "unfit to manage their own affairs, and a diminished capacity ward of "The State", after consistently demonstrable failure to launch?

I would be livid had I seen one of these things in a men's bathroom. This is no less bigoted than seeing a "colored only" sign on a bathroom door or above a drinking fountain.

These people only use the true tragedy of rape as an excuse to vent their vitriolic hatred towards men instead of seeing the perpetrators as simply individuals who are bad regardless of their gender. Also, they seek to negate the fact that both genders are equally predisposed to all kinds of violent acts which include killing children and abusing fellow adults.

Men need to voice their offence at such things but we don't we just seem to take it. I, for one, will not.

John, you gotta remember - even raising your voice, a glare, a huff, a thought - it's ALL violence (when done by men).

    why?
    all I said was this
"if women's groups on campus really gave a damn about rape prevention, they would lobby their state to enact common sense self defense laws on campus like the great state of Texas did this year"
    whats wrong with that

There is nothing wrong withat at all!

However, in the feminist mindset any atempt to educate women on how to take hold of any responsibility for protecting themselves, thus taking acountability, is considered victim blaming.

Don't be suprised if they post an article criticizing the Texas policy.

Obviously. Since they're designed to change the culture to want the government to wipe our asses.
